Basil is described as both relaxing and stimulating, and has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. Add to a room burner when you need to use your powers of concentration, in a morning bath to set you up for the day, and in a lotion or massage blend before or after exercising.

Blends well with bergamot, geranium, hyssop, neroli, marjoram, melissa and lavender.

Bergamot is commercially used as a flavouring for Earl Grey tea and marmalade. This cheering and uplifting essential oil is ideal to use at the start of your day or during what feels like a particularly long day.  It is well known for its antiseptic properties and it can be added to skin care preparations to suit oily or combination skin and generally maintain a healthy complexion.

Blends well with: cinnamon, coriander, cypress, jasmine, lemon, myrrh, rose and sandalwood.

The humble carrot has been known as a medicinal plant as well as a culinary one since at least 1st Century A.D. Carrot Seed essential oil is distilled from the seeds and has substantial amounts of Vitamins A, C and B.  Carrot Seed can help ease fluid retention and cystitis. Glandular problems and PMT can all be helped by Carrot Seed as it is useful in balancing the hormones and regulating the menstrual cycle. A good aid to healthy skin. Used in a cream or diluted in a carrier oil, it restores tone and elasticity, and may even help to reduce wrinkling. It can also be used to help with eczema, psoriasis, ulcerative conditions of the skin and even skin cancer.  Carrot Seed is  helpful against the accumulation of toxins, also with arthritis, gout, oedema and rheumatism.  Carrot Seed blends well with geranium, cedarwood, citrus and spice oils.

Chamomile is both soothing and comforting, and ideal for use in a bath or massage blend when your day is over. Add it to body lotions and skin care preparations to suit normal, fair and sensitive skin. Chamomile is also a favourite choice for use with children. Make a t-bag with dried chamomile flowers and put in warm bath to help ease eczema.

Chamomile blends well with: benzoin, bergamot, geranium, lavender, lemon, marjoram, neroli, rose and ylang ylang.

Toning and refreshing, it is particularly good for oily skin, and added to a foot bath will promote healthy feet. Best known for its ability to deter flies and bugs at BBQ's and moths from your wardrobe.   Citronella blends well with geranium, lemon, bergamot, orange, cedarwood and pine.

A refreshing, spicy, juniper and pine like aroma and is often used as a modifier in pine fragrances. It blends well with lavender, clary sage, citrus and angelica. Benefits: purifying, balancing.

As it can regulate the menstrual cycle it is best avoided during pregnancy. It is well known for it's effect on varicose veins but care should be taken as applying this oil in massage can be too heavy.

Dill has been used since the earliest times as a medicinal and culinary herb. Helpful against lack of periods and is said to promote milk flow in nursing mothers.  Probably the best use for Dill is to help colic in children.  It is also said to ease indigestion, flatulence and dyspepsia. Blends well with mint, nutmeg and other spice or citrus essential oils.

Eucalyptus is said to be antibacterial, disinfectant and an analgesic. It has been used to relieve coughs, colds, and other respiratory troubles. It soothes muscle and joint pains, and helps to heal wounds, burns, ulcers and insect bites. It is said to promote activity, vitality, and energy.  A few drops of oil in a diffuser is said to kill germs and airborne bacteria, a good idea for a sickroom.  Try a few drops in your final rinse when washing bed clothes to help keep dust mites at bay.  In fact Eucalyptus has many uses especially in cleaning around the house and if you want some more information please contact us.

Precautions: Eucalyptus oil should not be used on children under the age of 3. It can irritate the skin if undiluted. It is best avoided by people with high blood pressure or epilepsy.

Frankincense essential oil comes from the bark resin of the tree; it has a delicate, spicy, relaxing fragrance, which is also described as inspiring. Use this essential oil during the quieter moments of your day when you need to collect your thoughts; it is often used in meditation and yoga. Add frankincense to skin care and body care preparations for mature skin.

Ginger is best described as warming and is popular in the winter months. Known for its stimulating properties.  Add to a massage blend or a bath before or after exercise. Ginger is also known as clearing, and is ideal for use in a room burner or for inhalation.

Ho Wood and Camphor come from the same tree. Camphor is distilled from the wood of the tree, while Ho Wood is distilled from the leaf and twigs.  It is nourishing and supportive to the immune system.  Ho Wood is a sedative and said to be great for insomnia. 

The aroma and properties are similar to Rosewood.  It blends well with other floral notes such as lavender, ylang ylang and bergamot, and other woods, such as cedarwood.   When having to endure the stress of a long journey put a few drops on a cotton ball, put it in a plastic bag, and open it up every few hours to smell its woodsy, lightly floral aroma.

Warning: This is a powerful oil and should be used with care.  People with a medical problem should not use this oil without proper advice.

Precautions: Juniperberry oil should not be used during pregnancy or by those with kidney disease and any other inflammatory condition. It is not suitable for young children and should be used in moderation.

Lavandin is a hybrid plant, a cross between true Lavender (L. angustifolia) and Lavender spike (L. latifolia).  It has a lighter floral aroma than traditinal Lavender.   It has relaxing properties and considered excellent for easing muscle pain.

One of the few steam distilled oils so true to the aroma of the fresh crushed leaf of the herb. Lemon Verbena is said to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, fever reducer and sedative. It is generally inhaled for stress, insomnia, depression, nervous fatigue and to help during an asthmatic crisis. Inhaling it is said to reduce nausea and dizziness.  Lemon Verbena is one of the most sensitizing essential oils; it should not be used directly on the skin. It may be wise to restrict use of this oil to a burner or diffuser or for use in a room or linen spray. Lemon Verbena blends well with: neroli, palmarosa, frankincense, lemon and other citrus oils.

Delightful, tangy, citrus aroma. Dozens of limes are needed to produce just ½ ounce of oil. Two types of lime oil are commonly sold: distilled and cold-pressed. Distilled oil is pale yellow or clear in colour with a fruity, limeade aroma. Pressed oil is yellowish to green in colour, with a rich, fresh, lime peel aroma. While pressed lime oil is produced in smaller quantities and is more expensive than distilled lime oil, it is preferred in aromatherapy. Lime oil applied to the skin, may, in the presence of sunlight, cause a skin reaction. It is refreshing and cheering.

May Chang has a fresh, fruity fragrance and an uplifting aroma that is like citrus, mainly orange and lemon with a hint of spice. It is soothing and calming. It is also an astringent, antiseptic and a tonic and like many of the citrus oils, it is good for oily skin.  It is reported to be good at tackling cellulite.  Blends well with basil, bergamot, geranium, ginger, jasmine, lavender, lemon, neroli, orange, petitgrain, rose, rosemary, rosewood, ylang ylang.

Melissa essential oil has many uses; it helps to bring calmness to the mind, has a sedating effect, calming to the heart and palpitations and lowering blood pressure.   Its will help regulate the menstrual cycle and may help female infertility.   A wonderful aid to people who have been bereaved through sudden illness or accident.  Melissa blends well with lavender and geranium and other floral or citrus essential oils.

Also known as Orange Blossom oil and was originally used by the Romans. Valuable in skin care it has the special property of stimulating the growth of healthy cells and has certain rejuvenating effects. Neroli can be used for all skin types but is especially helpful for dry or sensitive skins.  Neroli is antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic and aphrodisiac.  It is also said to be a gentle sedative.   Neroli can help with PMT because of its calming, anti-stress action.  It is often valuable for depression in older, menopausal women.  Neroli blends well with most oils but the most recommended would be the floral categories such as rose, jasmine and lavender.

Nutmeg oil has the characteristic aromatic, volatile, oily-spicy fragrance of whole nutmegs. Nutmeg oil is a component in men's fragrances and spicy perfumes. It is said to be rejuvenating, uplifting and energizing.

Patchouli has a soothing and sensual fragrance capable of arousing physical energies; it also has strong antiseptic properties. Particularly suited to dry and mature skin. It has quite a strong aroma and may be too much for some people and may cause loss of appetite. It can be a sedative in low doses and a stimulate in high doses.  A favourite oil for mens products and massage blends.

Petitgrain is relaxing, refreshing and rejuvenating.  The aroma is likened to Neroli oil which is distilled from the blossoms of the same tree. Use for refreshing in massage, bath, skin care (toning) and room burners. It can also promote a good night's sleep.  Used in a vaporiser, Petitgrain can help with convalescence, anger, panic, depression and anxiety, calming irritation, while relaxing the body and boosting the conscious intellectual side of the mind.  Petitgrain blends well with bergamot, lavender, palmarosa, geranium, rosewood and sandalwood.

Known as the Queen of Oils it is one of the best all-purpose oils to have.  Cooling, balancing, calming, toning it is suitable for all skin types and is a cell rejuvenator, an antiseptic, and an anti-inflammatory. Used in skin creams and lotions to soothe and heal various skin conditions, cuts, burns and to reduce swelling. Can be inhaled by asthmatics, and it relieves a variety of female problems including menstrual cramps and PMT symptoms. The scent is definitely an aphrodisiac and is used to relieve stress and depression.  Blends with: all floral oils; jasmine, geranium, patchouli, chamomile, ylang ylang  and vanilla.

The oil has a rose scented wood fragrance with a floral undertone.
