Make Your Own Medicine: Varicose Veins (Daily Mail)

Horse Chestnut Gel

Conkers contain saponins, plant-based chemical compounds used to improve the elasticity of the veins, reducing swelling.

20 conkers

500ml vodka

3 sachets vegetable gelatine

150ml water

5 drops Lavender pure essential oil

Blend conkers and vodka in a liquidiser until smooth. Place in a sterilised bottle and keep in a cool, dark place for 10 days to a month, shaking every day or so.  Strain before using.  Add vegetable gelatine to 150 ml water and whisk until dissolved.  Heat for 2 minutes, whisking constantly, pour in 150ml of the conker and vodka mix.  Add lavender essential oil. Put in a 250ml sterilised bottle.

Try a 24-hour patch test before using as horse chestnut can irritate.  Apply to affected areas twice daily.  Will keep in a fridge for 3 months.  From Grow Your One Drugs by James Wong.
