Create Your Own Bath Salts
Making your own bath salts is easy and rewarding and once you start hopefully you will be inspired to try more recipes and make some in pretty containers to give at birthday, Christmas or just to say I like you!
The Salt
You can use: Sea Salt, Epsom salts or a combination of both.
For something more luxurious try Dead Sea salt which has 21 trace minerals that is wonderful for your skin.
For sheer indulgence then use Himalayan crystal salt which contains an almost identical set of elements to those found inside the human body; i.e.84 of the possible 92 trace minerals, in the same proportion as naturally exists in our blood.
Add a couple of tbsps of baking soda to make your skin even softer.
Aroma
Use your favourite essential oil or a combination of oils. Check the properties of any oils that you use and understand the benefits and risks.
The Colour
You can use food colouring however it is sometimes difficult to get an even mix throughout the salt which in itself can look attractive in ajar.
The Look
Add oatmeal, lavender flows, chamomile flowers or any other dried herb or flower that will look nice and add texture and natural perfume.
To Measure
After a couple of attempts you will get the feel for the amount of essential oil that you want to use. As a general guideline try no more than 15 drops of essential oil to 1 cup of salt (this does not include the baking powder)
Container
Once made up the bath salts should be kept in an airtight container for the oils to infuse. The longer they are left the stronger the infusion and some oils will be stronger than others. To make a present use an airtight ‘fancy’ glass jar. Make a pretty label and add ribbons or raffia around the lid. You could personlise the label with ingredients and name of recipient. Ensure that your containers are washed and dried thoroughly before use.
